What Is the Greenhouse Effect and Why Does It Matter?

The greenhouse effect is a natural process where gases in the Earth’s atmosphere trap heat from the Sun. This trapped heat keeps our planet warm enough to support life. However, when too many greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere, more heat becomes trapped, causing the Earth’s temperature to rise.

In simple terms, you can think of Earth like a glasshouse. The Sun’s rays enter and warm the surface, but certain gases prevent some of that heat from escaping back into space. This is similar to how a greenhouse traps warmth to help plants grow.

Over the past century, the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by approximately 1°C, with much of that warming occurring in recent decades. According to global climate data, recent years have been among the warmest ever recorded. Rising temperatures are closely linked to increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.
