What Is the Arts? Understanding Creativity Through STEAM Learning
Many people associate the Arts with drawing, painting, sculpting, or photography, but the Arts go far beyond visual creativity.
What Is the Arts in STEAM Learning?
When exploring STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), it’s important to understand the vital role of the Arts. Many people associate the Arts with drawing, painting, sculpting, or photography — but the Arts go far beyond visual creativity.
The Arts include creative expression, storytelling, design, music, performance, interpretation, and cultural identity. In STEAM education, the Arts help children think imaginatively, communicate ideas effectively, and approach problem-solving from new perspectives.
To succeed in the Arts, children develop creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression. These skills can improve academic performance, enhance fine motor skills, and strengthen decision-making abilities. The Arts encourage innovation and help children connect logic with imagination.
At Pacific Learners Education, we recognise that Pacific and Māori cultures have a strong tradition of artistic excellence. This is reflected in tattoo designs, tapa patterns, carving, weaving, music, dance, and oral storytelling. Cultural knowledge, songs, and traditions have been passed down through generations, highlighting the deep connection between creativity and identity.
By integrating the Arts into STEAM learning, we celebrate cultural heritage while developing essential future skills.
