Learning and sharing prayers, songs, and cultural phrases can have a powerful impact on a child’s sense of belonging, identity, and connection to their culture. One meaningful way families pass down these traditions is through prayer.
In this video, Mele’s mother teaches her the Lord’s Prayer in Tongan, continuing the theme of Culture and Identity. By learning and memorising the prayer, Mele is able to connect with her faith and cultural heritage—just as her mother did when she was growing up.
For many Pacific families, faith plays an important role in everyday life, and learning prayers in the Tongan language helps children stay connected to both their culture and spiritual traditions.
At Pacific Learners, we are passionate about creating and sharing Pacific cultural content that supports the learning journey of Pacific children. To support this, we have developed Resource Pages dedicated to each Pacific culture, bringing together videos, images, songs, prayers, language lessons, and cultural knowledge in one place.

The Lord’s Prayer in Tongan translated to English
Ko ʻemau Tamai ʻoku ʻi Hēvani
Our Father who art in Heaven
Ke tapuhā ho huafa
Hallowed be thy name
Ke aʻu mai hoʻo puleʻanga
Thy kingdom come
Ke fai ho finangalo ʻi mamani
Thy will be done on earth
Hangē ko ia ʻi Hēvani
As it is in Heaven
Foaki mai he ʻaho ni ʻemau meʻakai fakaʻaho
Give us this day our daily bread
Pea fakamolemoleʻi ʻemau ngaahi angahala
And forgive us our trespasses
ʻO hangē ko ʻemau fakamolemoleʻi ʻa kinautolu ʻoku fai angahala mai kiate kimautolu
As we forgive those who trespass against us
Pea ʻoua naʻa ke tuku kimautolu ki he ʻahiʻahi
Lead us not into temptation
Ka ke fakahaofi kimautolu mei he fili
But deliver us from evil
He ʻoku ʻoʻou ʻa e pule, pea mo e mālohi, mo e kololia
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
ʻO taʻengata pea taʻengata. ʻEmeni.
Now and forever. Amen.
