Supporting Pacific Children Coping with Stress and Anxiety (Part 1)
The saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is from an African proverb, that means an entire community must play their part in providing a safe, healthy, encouraging and supportive environment for our children to thrive and succeed.
Supporting Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing in Pacific Communities
Improving our children’s wellbeing is a shared responsibility. The well-known proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” reminds us that a supportive and encouraging community plays a vital role in helping children thrive. When families, teachers, and communities work together, children are better supported emotionally, socially, and mentally.
This Pacific Learners video is the first in a three-part series focused on children’s mental health and wellbeing, with a special emphasis on supporting Pacific children and families.
In this video, we follow young Talia as she struggles to cope with stress and anxiety caused by challenges within her family. While Talia begins to show signs of emotional distress, it is her teacher who recognises the warning signs and takes action by communicating with her father.
This story highlights the importance of early intervention, open communication, and community support in protecting children’s mental wellbeing.
5 Warning Signs of Stress and Anxiety in Children
Parents, caregivers, and teachers should be aware of common signs that a child may be struggling:
-
Becoming withdrawn or unusually quiet, especially in social situations.
-
Overreacting to minor issues or showing increased aggression.
-
Difficulty concentrating or completing homework.
-
Nightmares or bedwetting linked to emotional stress.
-
Changes in eating or sleeping patterns, including trouble falling asleep due to worry.
Recognising these warning signs early can help families provide the right support before stress develops into more serious mental health concerns.
