Supporting Pacific Children Coping with Stress and Anxiety (Part 2)

As parents and caregivers, we are often busy and stressed ourselves, so we miss the signs off stress and anxiety that our children could be going through.

Helping Pacific Children Cope with Stress and Anxiety

As parents and caregivers, we are often managing our own stress, responsibilities, and busy schedules. Because of this, it can be easy to overlook the early signs of stress and anxiety in children.

When a child becomes quiet or withdrawn, we may assume they are simply tired, focused on homework, or needing rest. While moments of calm can feel reassuring, these changes in behaviour may sometimes signal underlying emotional challenges that require attention and support.

In Part One of the “Helping Our Children Cope with Stress and Anxiety” video series, Talia’s teacher notices that she is not herself. Recognising the change in behaviour, the teacher arranges a meeting with Talia’s father. Through open discussion and shared observations, they begin to understand the possible triggers behind Talia’s anxiety and stress.

This Pacific Learners video highlights the importance of communication in supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing. When parents and teachers work together and openly discuss concerns, children are more likely to receive the support they need to feel safe, understood, and confident.

5 Effective Ways to Communicate with Your Child

Strong communication is key to helping children cope with stress and anxiety. Here are five practical strategies:

  1. Give your child your full attention — turn off devices and minimise distractions to show they are your priority.

  2. Encourage open conversation by asking open-ended questions about their feelings and thoughts.

  3. Avoid judgement or quick solutions. Focus on listening and building trust rather than telling them what to do.

  4. Be mindful of your body language and tone. Calm posture and a gentle voice help children feel safe.

  5. Build on what your child shares by saying, “Tell me more” or “That sounds difficult,” without interrupting.

In Part One of this series, we explore the warning signs behind Talia’s stress and anxiety and demonstrate how early communication can make a meaningful difference.

Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of Pacific children begins with listening, understanding, and working together as families and communities.
